Chicago has definitely started the conference out right by providing amazing weather for all of us who have descended into the Windy City. I had always thought that the "Windy City" was known for the winds off of the great lakes - but that isn't the story. Chicago got the nickname "The Windy City" when they were competing for the World's fair, and kept on bragging on how amazing the city was, how quick it was rebuilt - to the point that the New York press (New York was also competing for the World's Fair too!) started referring to Chicago as their "Windy Friends from the North..."
The Walk!
I was walking from the Marriott to the the Sheraton where the ISO meeting was, and was walking past this building that had other stones embedded in it. I looked it up later and it is the Tribune building which won a design award in 1922 as the most beautiful office building in the world. But here is the cool part, the Tribune asked their correspondents to bring back bricks and rocks from around the world and they have embedded 149 rocks and/or bricks though out the lower exterior of the building. So needless to say - the walk was worth it!
International Standards Organization (ISO) HR Standards
Yesterday the US Technical Advisory Group (US TAG) met to discuss a number of items - to include congratulating Wayne Cascio for being such an amazing chair person. Due to scheduling, the meeting is before the close of the vote to figure out who will be the new chair - but there was no doubt of our appreciation for Wayne! If you have read any of his books, I can promise you he is all of that and more in person!
Workforce Planning and Recruiting are the next focus areas for the US (At least hopefully!). The United States has submitted to the World Committee which will meet in September the recommendation that the next two standards the committee kick off are Recruiting and Workforce Planning. It is still pending international approval - but if you are an expert in either one of these areas I would start warming up your engines and reach out to us. If you want to learn more come to our session on Tuesday.
The Floor:
I did have a chance to briefly walk the floor to get a flavor and Wow! It is huge! My initial flavor/impression is that there are a LOT of employee recognition programs out there! Ranging from OC Tanner, Michael C. Fina, to specific offerings (e.g. Regal, etc.). I must admit my first reaction was that this was a great indication that is some major profit in those goods... BUT after I got through the quick cynical thought - I actually was excited as this also indicates that people realize and are purchasing items that encourage Human Capital! I have scheduled more time on Monday to look around the floor and absorb more!
Conclusion of Day one?
It is always great to be among 15,700 HR folks! There is so much camaraderie and people greeting and getting to know each other!
