HR Technology Conference - First Day Impressions

If you haven't been to a HR Technology show - then you need to put it on your list for next year! The only way I know how to explain it - is it kind of like a Shopping trip to Mall of America, A Ted Conference and a Family reunion all rolled into one. If you are in the HR Tech space - then you definitely need to be here.

The Size:

The HR Expo floor is pretty huge - it has 300 vendors - and 100 of them are new this year. There are also 8,000 people in participants in attendance. To give you some contrast - the SHRM national convention had 15,000 people.. So HR Tech (which is one function of HR) brings in 8,000. Pretty cool.

For me, one of the coolest things is to just walk the expo floor and see what is there - and see what is new in terms of vendors or offerings. Here are some of my observations:

1. Everyone is here!

Last year there were some firms not here (e.g. consulting houses, etc..) and this year I can't think of a major firm that doesn't have a presence here.

2. The SWAG (trinkets)

Seeing what people have is always fun and seeing what the contest are! So if you were here - there are lots of T-Shirts, Pens, contests for iPads… But probably the coolest is one company is giving away cool SOCKS!! The other new thing is that there seem to be a lot of folks giving away cigarette lighter USB Chargers.

3. Cool new Technology

There is lots of the expected (e.g. 51 applicant tracking systems) - but there are a couple of new firms here. There is a group call MacroMicro that is doing very cool Data Visualization of the org charts. It is a client hosted web server that runs the charts. An example is below:

There is also a firm called Blissbook that is redoing how you can create employee handbooks! So take the boring policy laden handbooks and now convert them into something very cool, engaging and exciting.
