Too focused on Big Data?

Dr. Alec Levinson was leading a panel discussion on Big Data, and had David Bernstein from Equest on there, along with Teri Morse, VP of Recruiting for Xerox. Dr. Levinson is at the Center for Effective Organizations and is focused on human capital metrics and analysis. What was really interesting is that he kept on challenging the group as to whether advanced analytics were necessary!

He kept on showing how the business issues, the business intuition is more important than the actual statistical analysis. Most of the time, we are still doing basic analysis, excel spreadsheets, but at the end of the day - it is analysis. So he is cautioning us on making sure Big Data is not a buzzword - or Old Wine in New bottles.

Teri Morse also explain that while she had some statistical people working for her - her first priority for them was to make sure they studied the business and knew what questions to ask.Teri measures her 280 recruiters (yep 280) by individual metrics and team metrics. She measures Time to Start, to Time to Fill.

Alec also brought a great point about studying managerial competency models, and his concern is that it is the same competency model - and it is used to measure a wide variety of jobs - which creates a scenario for norming of the data.
